Printer error codes
Enter the code your printer is showing. Every code below has its own page with the manufacturer’s documented meaning, what to do before you try the fix, what to do if it comes back, and a link to the manufacturer document it was checked against.
Punctuation and spaces are optional — 13.xx, 13 xx, and 13xx all find the same entry.
Copying the code correctly
- Write down the message exactly as the printer shows it, including letters, spaces, and punctuation around the number.
- Note the exact model number as well. The same-looking code can mean something different on another model family, so each page states the model scope its documentation covers.
- A blinking-light pattern is not a code. If the printer has no screen, start from the symptom list.
204 error codes published across 9 brands. Each one is verified against manufacturer documentation and carries the date it was last checked.
Brother · 56 codes
All Brother error codes- 2-sided DisabledThe back cover is not fully closed, or the 2-sided (duplex) tray is not installed correctly, so duplex printing is disabled. Close the back cover completely and reseat the duplex tray.

- 1660An ink tank cannot be recognised because it is not installed or is not a compatible tank for this printer.
- 1682A FINE cartridge cannot be recognized. Replace the FINE cartridge following Canon's replacement guide; if that doesn't fix it, the printer may have internal damage requiring service from an authorized Canon repair center. Unplugging erases stored faxes.
- 1688The ink has run out. Canon's remedy is to replace the tank, or to hold Stop for at least five seconds to disable remaining-ink detection. Canon warns that continuing to print in this condition may damage the printer.
- 168CAn ink tank is installed in the wrong position. Canon's remedy is to open the cover and move the tank named on the screen into its correct slot.
- 1700The ink absorber is almost full. Pressing OK allows printing to continue, but Canon directs the owner to contact a Canon service centre to request a repair — the absorber is not a user-serviceable part.
- 1712The ink absorber is almost full. Press OK to continue printing for now, and contact Canon service to arrange a repair/replacement of the absorber.
- 1890Protective tape or packing material used to secure the print head holder during shipping may still be attached. Canon's remedy is to open the scanning unit or cover and remove it. On FINE-cartridge models the wording refers to the cartridge holder and the paper output cover.
- 1892The carriage stopper is still inserted in the printer. Open the scanning unit/cover, pull the carriage stopper straight up to remove it, reseat it in the adjacent indent, then close the unit.
- 2110The paper settings for the print or copy job do not match the cassette paper information set on the printer. Canon offers three choices: print on the loaded paper, replace the paper, or cancel the job.
- 2500Automatic print head alignment failed. Canon gives three possible causes: the print head nozzles are clogged, paper other than A4 or Letter is loaded, or the paper output slot is exposed to strong light.
- 2700An error occurred during copying (timeout), or a document remains stuck in the ADF during a scan. Press OK to clear a copy timeout and retry, press OK to feed out a stuck document, or press Stop to cancel scanning and retry. Do not insert objects into the document output slot.
- 2801A document is jammed in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder). Depending on the situation: press OK to auto-feed out a remaining document, or turn the printer off, open the document feeder cover and carefully pull the jammed document out. Reduce the loaded document stack if jams recur, and contact Canon service if unresolved.
- 2900Scanning the print head alignment sheet failed. Check the alignment sheet is placed correctly on the platen, that both platen and sheet are clean, load plain A4/Letter paper in the front tray, print a nozzle check pattern to verify head condition, and retry automatic alignment (or fall back to manual alignment).
- 3252The maintenance cartridge is almost full. Press OK to dismiss the message; the maintenance cartridge should be replaced soon.
- 3446The IP address and subnet mask are conflicting. Canon's remedy is to disable Wireless Direct or change the Wi-Fi configuration so the two subnets do not overlap.

Epson · 30 codes
All Epson error codes- An error occurred while saving. Check and if necessary, change the memory device. The printer could not write scanned or stored data to the inserted external storage device, which may be damaged, full, or unsupported. The user should inspect or swap the memory device.
- An ink cartridge is installed incorrectly. One or more cartridges are not fully seated in their bays. The user must press down firmly on each cartridge to ensure a proper connection.
- A printer's ink pad is nearing the end of its service lifeThe internal ink pads are close to saturation. Printing continues, and the message repeats until the pads are replaced. Epson directs owners to Epson support rather than describing a user replacement.
- Authentication error. Check the authentication method, authenticated account, and authenticated passwordThe printer's login credentials for the destination shared folder were rejected. Epson directs the user to re-enter the correct username/password, confirm the password hasn't expired, and verify Location settings.
- Cannot recognize the media. See your documentation for more details about the media. An inserted memory card or storage device does not meet the printer's supported specifications and cannot be read. The user should confirm the device type/format is supported.
- Cannot use the inserted Memory Device. See your documentation for details. The inserted memory device is incompatible or malfunctioning and cannot be used by the printer; the user should check documentation for supported device types.
- Check that the printer driver is installed on the computer and that the port settings are correct. The printer is not receiving expected communication from the connected computer, typically because the driver isn't installed or the printer port is misconfigured.
- Communication error. Check if a PC is connected. The printer cannot reach the computer. Epson's remedy is to confirm the connection and that the printer software is correctly installed.
- Communication error. Check the Wi-Fi/network connection. The printer lost network communication with the scan destination while trying to send a scanned file. Epson recommends enabling MS Network, checking that the destination address matches, granting folder sharing permissions, and printing a network connection report.
- DNS error. Check DNS settings. While scanning to a shared network folder, the printer could not resolve the destination computer's network address via DNS. Epson recommends using a static IP address in the destination path instead of a computer name, and verifying DNS settings on the printer, server, and network.
- Failed to receive faxes because the fax data capacity is full.Incoming fax storage on the printer has reached capacity, so no more faxes can be received until stored faxes are reviewed and cleared via the Job/Status menu.
- Ink cartridge(s) are low. Print job may not print completely.Remaining ink is low enough that the current print job may fail to finish. The user can continue printing at the risk of an incomplete job, or replace cartridges first.
- Ink pads end of service lifeWaste ink pads saturated; lockout
- No dial tone is detected. The printer's fax function could not detect a dial tone on the connected phone line, so faxes cannot be sent. Epson recommends checking the phone cable, or disabling Dial Tone Detection when the printer is behind a PBX system.
- No paper has been loaded that matches the paper size setting.None of the loaded paper sources contain paper matching the size configured for the print job, so the printer cannot proceed until matching paper is loaded.
- Paper Configuration is set to Off. Some features may not be available. The printer's Paper Configuration setting, which lets the printer auto-detect loaded paper, has been disabled. Some features (including AirPrint) will not work correctly until it is re-enabled.
- Paper settings for XX do not match the Print Settings. Pull out Paper Cassette 1 or Paper Cassette 2 to place the following paper. The paper size/type physically loaded in the named cassette does not match what was specified in the print job's Print Settings. The user must pull out the indicated cassette and load the correct paper.
- Printer error. Turn the power off and on again.A serious error has occurred. Epson's remedy is to power cycle, then check for a paper jam; if there is no jam, the printer needs support.
- Print Head Adjustment Canceled. There is a problem with the print head. Contact Epson Support. An automatic print-head alignment/cleaning routine failed because Epson's diagnostics detected a fault in the print head itself, not just a clogged nozzle. Epson directs the user to contact support rather than retry cleaning.
- Recovery modeA firmware update failed and the printer has fallen back to recovery mode. Epson's remedy is to connect the printer by USB cable and run the firmware update again.
- Service requiredGeneric lockout, often pad-counter related
- The combination of the IP address and the subnet mask is invalid. The printer's manually entered network settings are inconsistent — the IP address does not fit within the configured subnet mask — and the printer cannot join the network until corrected.
- The file name is already in use. Rename the file and scan again.A file with the same name already exists at the scan destination. The user must delete the existing file or choose a new filename before rescanning.
- The ink cartridge displayed on the LCD screen is not recognized.Epson's non-genuine-ink detection identified that an installed cartridge is not a recognized/genuine Epson cartridge. Epson recommends installing genuine Epson ink cartridges.
- The maintenance box is at the end of its service lifeThe maintenance box must be replaced before printing can continue. Unlike the ink pads, the maintenance box is a user-replaceable part — though Epson states it is not covered by the product warranty.

- The printer's borderless printing ink pad is nearing the end of its service life. The internal absorbent pad dedicated to borderless printing is approaching the end of its usable life. It is not user-replaceable; Epson recommends contacting support before it fails, though normal (non-borderless) printing continues to work.
- To use cloud services, update the root certificate from the Epson Web Config utility. The printer's stored root security certificate is out of date, blocking connections to Epson cloud services (e.g., Epson Connect). The user must open the Web Config utility and install/update the certificate.
- You cannot use AirPrint if Paper Setup Auto Display is disabled.AirPrint requires the printer's Paper Setup Auto Display feature to be turned on; with it off, AirPrint jobs will not function until the setting is re-enabled.
- You need to replace Ink Cartridge(s).One or more ink cartridges are fully expended and printing cannot continue until replaced.
HP · 29 codes
All HP error codes- 0x610000f6Carriage Jam — the print carriage has stalled or is physically obstructed, most often by a paper jam or a cartridge that isn't seated correctly. Not a firmware/communication fault.
- 13.xxPaper jam; sub-code identifies location in the paper path
- 33.05.0XSureStart error range covering boot-code corruption (33.05.00-03, auto-recovered, no action needed) and firmware that failed cryptographic BIOS validation (33.05.04-07, requires downloading firmware via the preboot menu) plus invalid boot/downgrade attempts (33.05.08-09).
- 33.05.1XWhitelisting error: a firmware file's digital signature failed validation, indicating tampering or a certificate problem. HP's fix: perform a Partial Clean, then if the device doesn't reboot to Ready, download firmware via the preboot menu.
- 33.05.2XIntrusion Detection error range: 33.05.21 flags a potential memory-corruption intrusion (possible malware injection); 33.05.22-24 indicate the intrusion-detection process couldn't scan or failed to initialize. HP's fix: power cycle the device (selecting Continue from the preboot menu will not clear it).
- 49Firmware / communication error; often clears on power cycle
- 59Internal motor error (drum motor startup/rotation fault). Variants indicate which motor/color: 59.05.60 (black), 59.06.60 (cyan), 59.07.60 (magenta), 59.08.60 (yellow); 59.C0 indicates a developer-disengagement motor rotation error.
- 79An internal firmware error, not specifically a network print server error. Power cycling often clears it; persistent cases point to firmware, incompatible DIMMs, or network services (e.g. IPv6/WS-Discovery) as contributing causes.
- 99.00.32Occurs when attempting to downgrade a SureStart-capable printer to non-SureStart firmware from a fully running state (EWS or Web Jetadmin) instead of via the preboot menu. HP's fix: the firmware was not actually downloaded — redo the downgrade using the preboot menu with physical access to the device.
- Er/01The printer's input tray is empty. HP's fix: load paper into the tray.
- Er/02A door on the printer is open. HP's fix: verify the top cover is fully closed.

- Er/05Paper is jammed in the toner-cartridge area inside the printer. HP's fix: remove the cartridge (keep it out of direct light), extract the jammed sheet, and reinstall.
- Er/06Paper is jammed in the output-bin area. HP's fix: open the cartridge door, then with both hands pull the jammed sheet free without sharp tools.
- Er/07The toner supply (cartridge) is missing or incorrectly installed. HP's fix: install or reinstall the cartridge.
- Er/08The toner cartridge has reached a Very Low level and the printer is configured to stop printing. HP's fix: replace the cartridge, or change the cartridge setting to Continue in the printer's Embedded Web Server.
- Er/11There is a problem with the toner cartridge itself. HP's fix: confirm the shipping tape/seal has been fully removed and that the cartridge is compatible and undamaged.
- Er/14The installed toner cartridge is HP-cartridge-protection locked to a different printer and is not authorized for use in this one. HP's fix: replace with an authorized cartridge.
- Er/17A non-genuine (non-HP) toner cartridge is installed; the printer's Cartridge Policy setting only allows Original HP cartridges. HP's fix: replace with a genuine HP cartridge.
- Er/25The paper loaded doesn't match the size requested by the print job. HP's fix: load the correct size, or press Start Copy/Resume to continue with the currently loaded paper.
- Er/26The printer experienced a general print-engine error. HP's fix: press Start Copy/Resume to continue; if it recurs, power the printer off for 30 seconds and back on.

- Er/75The printer is not connected to the internet, so it cannot validate the installed supply. HP's fix: reconnect the printer to the internet.
- Er/81Incorrect firmware was loaded onto the printer. HP's fix: press Start Copy/Resume to continue, then load the correct firmware.
Kyocera · 9 codes
All Kyocera error codes- 1102"Login Username and/or Password is incorrect" for the scan-to-email/SMB destination credentials — a specific scan-job authentication failure, not a general network connection failure.
- Cannot connect. The Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct connection did not complete. Kyocera's documented action is to check the settings and the signal conditions. This is a wireless-association failure at the machine, distinct from the authentication-server messages that appear when the network is fine but a credential or the machine's clock is wrong.
- Cannot connect to Authentication ServerThe machine reached the point of authenticating and failed. Kyocera documents four distinct variants with different checks: verify the connection status with the server, check the domain name, check the host name, and set the machine's time to match the server's time. The clock variant is the one that surprises people — an authentication server will reject a machine whose time has drifted, even though every name and password is correct.
- Low temperature. Adjust room temp. The room is too cold for the machine to operate within specification. Kyocera's documented action is to adjust the temperature and the humidity of the room. Worth knowing before a cold-garage or unheated-office machine is diagnosed as faulty.
- Machine failure. Call service. An error has occurred in the machine. Kyocera's documented instruction is to make a note of the error code shown on the message display and contact your service representative. This is the guide's answer for numeric machine faults generally: Kyocera does not publish the meanings of individual C-codes to users, so the code is information for the technician rather than something to act on yourself.
- Paper jammed above Cassette 1.A paper jam has occurred. Kyocera documents that the machine stops and indicates the location of the jam on the screen, and instructs you to leave the machine switched on, select Help on the screen, and follow the on-screen instructions to remove the paper. Leaving it powered on is the part people get wrong — the guided sequence depends on the machine knowing where the sheet stopped.
- Replace MK.The maintenance kit is due. Kyocera documents replacement of the maintenance kit parts as necessary every 100,000 pages of printing, and states that it requires professional servicing — the guide's instruction is to contact your service representative rather than to fit it yourself. Like other page-counter messages this is a scheduled interval, not a detected failure.
- Replace the toner. The toner container is empty and must be replaced. Kyocera documents an earlier, separate message — "Toner is low. (Replace when empty.)" — which is a warning that the container is nearing its end, not an instruction to change it yet. Waiting for the replace message avoids discarding usable toner.
- Toner is low. (Replace when empty.)The toner container is nearing the end of its life. Kyocera's own wording contains the instruction: replace when empty, not now. The machine continues printing normally until the separate "Replace the toner." message appears.
Lexmark · 17 codes
All Lexmark error codes- 200.xxIndicates the printer registered one or more sheets as jammed under the toner cartridge, not specifically 'at the front of the printer.' If no physical jam is found despite repeated occurrences, a jam sensor may be malfunctioning and require service.
- 31.xxA supply is missing or is not answering the printer, so Lexmark asks you to reinstall it rather than replace it. The second pair of digits names which one: 31.40-31.43 a toner cartridge by colour, 31.60 the black imaging unit, 31.64 the colour imaging kit, 31.35 the waste toner bottle, 31.80 the fuser, and 31.30 the transfer module (which asks for a restart instead). Reseating usually clears it; dirty contacts are the common cause.
- 32.xx"Replace unsupported" — the printer recognises the supply but rejects it as not supported by this model. The second pair names the supply: 32.40-32.43 a colour cartridge, 32.60 the black imaging unit, 32.64 the colour imaging kit, and a 32.xy variant the fuser. This is a different fault from 31.xx (missing or unresponsive) and from 42.xx (right supply, wrong region).
- 33.xx"Non-Lexmark supply, see User's Guide" — the printer has detected a cartridge, imaging unit, or imaging kit that it does not identify as Lexmark-made. 33.40-33.43 is a colour cartridge, 33.60 the black imaging unit, 33.64 the colour imaging kit. It is a notice about the supply's origin, not a report of a hardware fault.
- 37.xInsufficient printer memory. 37.1 means there is not enough memory to collate the job, and 37.3 means some held jobs were deleted to make room. The related 39.1 "complex page" warns that a page was too complex to render fully, so some data may not have printed. All three are memory-pressure notices, not hardware faults.
- 42.xx"Replace cartridge, printer region mismatch" — the cartridge is genuine and otherwise correct, but it was manufactured for a different geographic region than the printer. Lexmark region-codes printers and cartridges to each other, so a cartridge bought in another region will be refused even when it physically fits. The fix is a cartridge made for your printer's region.
- 55.1"Error reading USB drive. Remove USB." The printer cannot read the USB flash drive plugged into its front port. The companion code 55.2 is the same fault for a USB hub, which Lexmark asks you to remove. Neither affects normal network or cable printing.
- 58"Too many trays attached" — more input trays are fitted than this model supports, and the guide states the number it can support. The printer stops rather than working with an unsupported stack.
- 59"Incompatible tray" — a fitted tray is not compatible with this printer. Distinct from 58, which is about how many trays are attached rather than whether a particular one belongs.
- 62"Disk full" — the printer's internal storage has no space left. The neighbouring codes cover the same device in other states: 61 a defective disk that Lexmark asks you to remove, and 63 a disk that needs formatting. These concern stored jobs and printer data, not the document you just sent.
- 8.01"Close all doors." A door, cover, or the multipurpose feeder is not fully latched. Lexmark treats an unlatched door as a stop condition because the paper path and the high-voltage sections are only isolated when everything is shut.
- 80.xxThe maintenance kit life ladder: 80.0x nearly low, 80.1x low, 80.2x very low, and 80.31 "replace maintenance kit, recommended life exceeded". Like the other ladders this is a page counter reaching a threshold, not a detected failure — the machine keeps printing until the final stage and often past it.
- 82.xxThe waste toner bottle ladder on colour machines: 82.0x "nearly full", 82.1x/82.2x "almost full", then 82.3x/82.4x "replace waste toner bottle". The bottle collects toner cleaned off the belt and drums, so it fills as a function of pages printed and cannot be emptied and reused.
- 84.xxThe imaging unit or imaging kit life ladder — the drum, not the toner. It escalates the same way as the cartridge ladder: 84.0x nearly low, 84.1x low, 84.2x very low, then 84.3x/84.4x replace, at which point the guide states the recommended life has been exceeded. Confusing this with 88.xx means buying the wrong part.
- 88.xxThe toner cartridge level ladder, not a fault. Lexmark escalates through four stages: 88.0x "cartridge nearly low", 88.1x "cartridge low", 88.2x "cartridge very low", then 88.3x/88.4x "replace the cartridge" — the last of which may state the estimated pages remaining, or zero. Only the final stage is asking you to change anything.
- 9.00"Printer had to restart. Last job may be incomplete." The printer restarted itself and is telling you the job that was running may not have finished. It is a notice about what happened, not a fault to clear — reprint the affected job and watch for whether the restart repeats.

Pantum · 1 code
All Pantum error codesRicoh · 5 codes
All Ricoh error codes- Add toner. Replace Print CartridgeThe toner is depleted and the print cartridge needs replacing. Ricoh documents a separate, earlier message — "Toner is almost empty" — for a cartridge nearing the end of its life, which is a prompt to obtain a replacement rather than to fit one. Ricoh warns specifically against switching the machine off while replenishing toner: doing so cancels the specified settings and printing will not resume.
- Replace Drum UnitThe black or colour drum unit has reached the end of its life. Ricoh's documented action here is to contact your service representative — unlike the toner cartridge, this is not presented as a user-replaceable part on this machine.
- SC codesA three-digit SCnnn code Ricoh's firmware displays when it detects a fault it cannot recover from on its own. The machine stops operating and cannot be used until the underlying fault is serviced.
- SCxxx-xx"Call Service" shown with an SC number and the machine's serial number. Ricoh documents this as the device requiring repair, and the accompanying "Functional Problems" message as a malfunction requiring maintenance or repair — in both cases the documented action is to arrange service. Note the format: on these machines the code is SCxxx-xx, longer than the three-digit SCnnn form used on other Ricoh lines.
- Waste Toner Bottle is full or not set correctlyThe waste toner bottle has reached capacity, or it is fitted but not seated correctly. The wording covers both cases deliberately, so check that the bottle is properly seated before assuming it is full — a bottle knocked loose during another repair produces the same message as one that has genuinely filled.
Xerox · 9 codes
All Xerox error codes- 010-317"Fuser Error, Reseat Fuser, Restart Printer." Xerox's documented steps are to confirm a genuine Xerox toner cartridge is fitted, then reseat the fuser. Reseating means removing and refitting a component that runs hot in normal use, so let the machine cool before opening it.
- 010-330Fuser motor failure. Xerox's documented response is to power the machine off and on (a partial or full reset), and to replace the cleaning cartridge (fuser web). The 010 prefix is Xerox's fuser subsystem, so a code in this range points at the hot section of the machine rather than the paper path.
- 016-757Print job failed because Xerox Standard Accounting (Auditron) rejected it — a missing or incorrect Accounting/User ID — not a generic secure-print authentication failure.
- 077-101"Registration Sensor Jam" (Regi Sensor Off Jam) — the registration sensor failed to turn off within the expected time after the registration clutch engaged, typically caused by worn/contaminated rollers, drive gear wear, or out-of-spec paper.
- 077-900"Registration Sensor Static Jam" — paper is detected stuck at/near the registration sensor; resolution requires manually clearing jammed paper from the specified location (e.g. Left Door A / rear cover) rather than a generic jam.
- 077-902Jam in the device — an IOT static jam, reported alongside 077-900 and 077-912 in the same fault. Xerox's documented action is to clear all jams at Door A. The article names unsupported media, incorrect paper settings, improper loading, and environmental conditions as the common causes, so a jam that keeps returning is usually a paper problem rather than a broken part.
- 077-912Jam in the device — an IOT static jam, reported alongside 077-900 and 077-902 in the same fault. Xerox's documented action is to clear all jams at Door A, then contact support if the jam persists. The 077 prefix is Xerox's paper-feed subsystem.
- 093-930"Replace Yellow Cartridge." Xerox documents three steps in order: remove the yellow toner cartridge and gently shake it six times before reinstalling it, power the printer off for ten seconds and back on, and only then replace the cartridge. The shake step is there because the code can fire while usable toner remains, unevenly distributed.
- 093-933"Replace Toner Cartridge — Toner Empty." Xerox's documented steps are to make sure a genuine Xerox toner cartridge is being used, then replace the cartridge. The 093 prefix is Xerox's toner and xerographics subsystem.
