Canon printer error codes
Every code below opens a full page: what Canon documents the code to mean, what to check before acting on it, what to do if it returns, and a link to the Canon document it was verified against.
48 of 48 catalogued Canon codes published. The rest stay unpublished until their documentation has been read.
- #001The original document is jammed in the ADF feeder during a fax/scan job. Remove the jammed original per the paper-jam troubleshooting section.
- 1000There is no paper in the rear tray, or the paper is not loaded correctly. Canon's remedy is to reload the paper, align the guides, set the paper information and press OK.
- 1200The scanning unit or cover is open. Closing it clears the message.
- 1240The operation panel is closed while a job was in progress. Open the operation panel and press OK to resume printing, or press Stop to cancel the job.
- 1300Paper is jammed while feeding from the rear tray. Canon's remedy is to pull the paper out slowly with both hands. If the paper tears, the procedure escalates to opening the printer to retrieve the fragments.
- 1313Paper jammed as the printer pulled in already-printed paper, on the duplex re-feed path. Canon documents three places to check: the output slot, inside the printer, and the rear side.
- 1372Print head replacement can't proceed because the maintenance cartridge is almost full. Stop the print head replacement, close the scanning unit/cover, and replace the maintenance cartridge first before attempting the print head replacement again.
- 1401Canon states the print head may be damaged. The documented remedy is a power cycle, then contacting a Canon service centre if the code returns.
- 1403A FINE cartridge error has occurred. Remove and reinstall the FINE cartridge; if unresolved, replace it with a new one; if it still persists, contact Canon service for repair. Unplugging erases stored faxes.
- 1410An ink tank cannot be recognised. Canon's remedy is to remove the tank named on the screen and reinstall it until it clicks into place, replacing it if the code persists.
- 1470Print head is not installed properly. Open the scanner unit/cover, push the print head locking cover down to check the print head is seated, firmly push the joint buttons into place, and close the unit. Remove the orange protective label/tape before installing.
- 1496The maintenance cartridge may not be installed properly, or is not compatible with this printer. Remove and reinstall the maintenance cartridge correctly per the replacement instructions.
- 1650The ink cartridge cannot be recognized — it may not be seated properly, or an incompatible/subscription cartridge is installed. Remove the cartridge and install the original cartridge that shipped with the printer, or press Stop to cancel the current operation.
- 1660An ink tank cannot be recognised because it is not installed or is not a compatible tank for this printer.
- 1682A FINE cartridge cannot be recognized. Replace the FINE cartridge following Canon's replacement guide; if that doesn't fix it, the printer may have internal damage requiring service from an authorized Canon repair center. Unplugging erases stored faxes.
- 1688The ink has run out. Canon's remedy is to replace the tank, or to hold Stop for at least five seconds to disable remaining-ink detection. Canon warns that continuing to print in this condition may damage the printer.
- 168CAn ink tank is installed in the wrong position. Canon's remedy is to open the cover and move the tank named on the screen into its correct slot.
- 1700The ink absorber is almost full. Pressing OK allows printing to continue, but Canon directs the owner to contact a Canon service centre to request a repair — the absorber is not a user-serviceable part.
- 1712The ink absorber is almost full. Press OK to continue printing for now, and contact Canon service to arrange a repair/replacement of the absorber.
- 1890Protective tape or packing material used to secure the print head holder during shipping may still be attached. Canon's remedy is to open the scanning unit or cover and remove it. On FINE-cartridge models the wording refers to the cartridge holder and the paper output cover.
- 1892The carriage stopper is still inserted in the printer. Open the scanning unit/cover, pull the carriage stopper straight up to remove it, reseat it in the adjacent indent, then close the unit.
- 2110The paper settings for the print or copy job do not match the cassette paper information set on the printer. Canon offers three choices: print on the loaded paper, replace the paper, or cancel the job.
- 2500Automatic print head alignment failed. Canon gives three possible causes: the print head nozzles are clogged, paper other than A4 or Letter is loaded, or the paper output slot is exposed to strong light.
- 2700An error occurred during copying (timeout), or a document remains stuck in the ADF during a scan. Press OK to clear a copy timeout and retry, press OK to feed out a stuck document, or press Stop to cancel scanning and retry. Do not insert objects into the document output slot.
- 2801A document is jammed in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder). Depending on the situation: press OK to auto-feed out a remaining document, or turn the printer off, open the document feeder cover and carefully pull the jammed document out. Reduce the loaded document stack if jams recur, and contact Canon service if unresolved.
- 2900Scanning the print head alignment sheet failed. Check the alignment sheet is placed correctly on the platen, that both platen and sheet are clean, load plain A4/Letter paper in the front tray, print a nozzle check pattern to verify head condition, and retry automatic alignment (or fall back to manual alignment).
- 3252The maintenance cartridge is almost full. Press OK to dismiss the message; the maintenance cartridge should be replaced soon.
- 3446The IP address and subnet mask are conflicting. Canon's remedy is to disable Wireless Direct or change the Wi-Fi configuration so the two subnets do not overlap.
- #406A USB storage error occurred while printing/scanning from a USB device. Reinsert the USB device, reduce the number of pages, or verify the device is formatted as FAT16/FAT32.
- 495AAn error occurred while communicating over Wi-Fi or while in standby. Canon's remedy is to turn the printer off and on again.
- 5100Canon states "Printer error has occurred". The documented remedy is a carriage-jam procedure: press Stop, turn the printer off, then check that the print head holder is not obstructed by transportation tape or jammed paper and remove any obstruction. Canon warns specifically not to touch the white belt inside the printer.
- 5107A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact an authorized Canon service center. Avoid tilting the printer during relocation to prevent ink leakage.
- 5200Canon states only "Printer error has occurred". The documented remedy is to turn the printer off, unplug it, plug it back in and turn it on, then contact a Canon service centre if that does not clear it. Canon names no component, so this is not specifically a printhead overheating message.
- 5400A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact a Canon service center for repair.
- 5B00Canon states only "Printer error has occurred" and gives no user step — it directs the owner straight to a Canon service centre. Canon does not describe 5B00 as a waste ink absorber message, despite that being the common third-party interpretation. The absorber wording belongs to codes 1700, 1701 and 1712.
- 5B02A printer error has occurred (no further detail given); while active the printer cannot print or scan. Contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair. Unplugging erases stored faxes.
- 6000Canon states "Printer error has occurred". Unlike the other codes in this family, the remedy begins by checking for and clearing a paper jam before power cycling and, failing that, contacting a service centre.
- 6801A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact a Canon service center.
- 6900A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact a Canon service center. Note: unplugging erases any stored faxes.
- 6910A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact a Canon service center. Note: unplugging erases any stored faxes.
- 6930A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair.
- 7500An error requiring a repair has occurred. Canon offers no retry step: turn the printer off, unplug it, and contact a Canon service centre.
- #753The Ethernet/LAN cable is not properly connected, blocking a network fax/scan-to-email/folder job. Check that the LAN cable is connected correctly.
- #852The machine turned off unexpectedly during a job. Check that the power plug is firmly inserted into the outlet.
- 9500A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact a Canon service center for professional repair.
- B200Canon's own text: "B200 Printer error has occurred... there may be a problem inside the printer." Required action: turn off promptly, unplug, and contact the service center. Canon does not specify printhead vs. another internal component.
- B20BAn error requiring a repair has occurred. Shut the printer down, disconnect it from power, and contact a Canon service center for professional repair. Unplugging erases stored faxes.
- C000A printer error has occurred (no further detail given). Power the printer off, unplug it, then reconnect and restart. If unresolved, contact your nearest Canon service center to request a repair.
