Lexmark printer error codes

Every code below opens a full page: what Lexmark documents the code to mean, what to check before acting on it, what to do if it returns, and a link to the Lexmark document it was verified against.

• 200.xxIndicates the printer registered one or more sheets as jammed under the toner cartridge, not specifically 'at the front of the printer.' If no physical jam is found despite repeated occurrences, a jam sensor may be malfunctioning and require service.
• 31.xxA supply is missing or is not answering the printer, so Lexmark asks you to reinstall it rather than replace it. The second pair of digits names which one: 31.40-31.43 a toner cartridge by colour, 31.60 the black imaging unit, 31.64 the colour imaging kit, 31.35 the waste toner bottle, 31.80 the fuser, and 31.30 the transfer module (which asks for a restart instead). Reseating usually clears it; dirty contacts are the common cause.
• 32.xx"Replace unsupported" — the printer recognises the supply but rejects it as not supported by this model. The second pair names the supply: 32.40-32.43 a colour cartridge, 32.60 the black imaging unit, 32.64 the colour imaging kit, and a 32.xy variant the fuser. This is a different fault from 31.xx (missing or unresponsive) and from 42.xx (right supply, wrong region).
• 33.xx"Non-Lexmark supply, see User's Guide" — the printer has detected a cartridge, imaging unit, or imaging kit that it does not identify as Lexmark-made. 33.40-33.43 is a colour cartridge, 33.60 the black imaging unit, 33.64 the colour imaging kit. It is a notice about the supply's origin, not a report of a hardware fault.
• 37.xInsufficient printer memory. 37.1 means there is not enough memory to collate the job, and 37.3 means some held jobs were deleted to make room. The related 39.1 "complex page" warns that a page was too complex to render fully, so some data may not have printed. All three are memory-pressure notices, not hardware faults.
• 42.xx"Replace cartridge, printer region mismatch" — the cartridge is genuine and otherwise correct, but it was manufactured for a different geographic region than the printer. Lexmark region-codes printers and cartridges to each other, so a cartridge bought in another region will be refused even when it physically fits. The fix is a cartridge made for your printer's region.
• 55.1"Error reading USB drive. Remove USB." The printer cannot read the USB flash drive plugged into its front port. The companion code 55.2 is the same fault for a USB hub, which Lexmark asks you to remove. Neither affects normal network or cable printing.
• 58"Too many trays attached" — more input trays are fitted than this model supports, and the guide states the number it can support. The printer stops rather than working with an unsupported stack.
• 59"Incompatible tray" — a fitted tray is not compatible with this printer. Distinct from 58, which is about how many trays are attached rather than whether a particular one belongs.
• 62"Disk full" — the printer's internal storage has no space left. The neighbouring codes cover the same device in other states: 61 a defective disk that Lexmark asks you to remove, and 63 a disk that needs formatting. These concern stored jobs and printer data, not the document you just sent.
• 8.01"Close all doors." A door, cover, or the multipurpose feeder is not fully latched. Lexmark treats an unlatched door as a stop condition because the paper path and the high-voltage sections are only isolated when everything is shut.
• 80.xxThe maintenance kit life ladder: 80.0x nearly low, 80.1x low, 80.2x very low, and 80.31 "replace maintenance kit, recommended life exceeded". Like the other ladders this is a page counter reaching a threshold, not a detected failure — the machine keeps printing until the final stage and often past it.
• 82.xxThe waste toner bottle ladder on colour machines: 82.0x "nearly full", 82.1x/82.2x "almost full", then 82.3x/82.4x "replace waste toner bottle". The bottle collects toner cleaned off the belt and drums, so it fills as a function of pages printed and cannot be emptied and reused.
• 84.xxThe imaging unit or imaging kit life ladder — the drum, not the toner. It escalates the same way as the cartridge ladder: 84.0x nearly low, 84.1x low, 84.2x very low, then 84.3x/84.4x replace, at which point the guide states the recommended life has been exceeded. Confusing this with 88.xx means buying the wrong part.
• 88.xxThe toner cartridge level ladder, not a fault. Lexmark escalates through four stages: 88.0x "cartridge nearly low", 88.1x "cartridge low", 88.2x "cartridge very low", then 88.3x/88.4x "replace the cartridge" — the last of which may state the estimated pages remaining, or zero. Only the final stage is asking you to change anything.
• 9.00"Printer had to restart. Last job may be incomplete." The printer restarted itself and is telling you the job that was running may not have finished. It is a notice about what happened, not a fault to clear — reprint the affected job and watch for whether the restart repeats.
