How to change ink or toner in an HP printer

Confirm the cartridge number HP lists for your exact model, then replace it with the printer powered on, handling the cartridge only by its sides and never touching the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.

Hazard: Do not copy the opening and removal sequence from a different HP printer. HP warns that touching the electrical contacts or the ink nozzles can cause ink-system failure, and that a cartridge cannot always be reinstalled once removed.

Ink cartridges

Caution: Handle the cartridge by its sides only. HP warns against touching the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.

    Confirm the cartridge number for your exact model

    Use HP's cartridge compatibility information for the exact model on the printer label. A cartridge that physically fits is not proof that HP lists it for your printer.

    Leave the printer on and open the access door

    With the printer powered on, open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the access position and stop completely before reaching in.

    Remove the old cartridge

    Press down on the cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out of its slot. Replace it promptly rather than leaving the slot empty.

    Unwrap the new cartridge without touching contacts or nozzles

    Remove the new cartridge from its packaging and pull off the protective tape. Hold it by the sides only, and do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.

    Insert it into the matching colour slot

    Slide the cartridge into its correctly coloured slot at a slight upward angle, then push it forward until it clicks into place. Close the access door.

    Complete alignment and test

    Follow any alignment prompt on the printer, then print one page to confirm the cartridge is recognised and printing correctly.

The printer reports no cartridge error, completes any alignment page it asks for, and prints one test page with all expected colours.
