Supply replacement

How to change printer ink or toner

Match the replacement supply to the exact printer model, then follow that model's official cartridge instructions; ink, toner, drum, and tank procedures are not interchangeable.

What you need

  • The exact printer model and region
  • A cartridge or supply explicitly listed for that model
  • The official replacement instructions for the exact printer

Hazard: Do not copy the opening, removal, or insertion sequence from another printer. Toner assemblies can include hot or high-voltage areas, while ink contacts and nozzles are easily damaged. Stop if the exact model instructions are unavailable.

Replace the supply

  1. 1

    Verify the exact replacement supply

Use the model label and official manufacturer compatibility information to confirm the cartridge, bottle, toner, drum, or maintenance item. Similar-looking supplies are not proof of compatibility.

  2. 2

    Open the model-specific instructions

Find the official replacement document for the exact printer. Confirm whether the printer should remain on, be powered off, or cool before any cover is opened.

  3. 3

Wait for moving parts to stop

Open only the access area named in the manual and wait until any carriage or mechanism is idle. Do not reach into an operating printer.

Handle the new supply by its safe surfaces

Remove only the packaging or seals identified by the manufacturer. For ink cartridges, avoid touching electrical contacts or ink nozzles; HP warns this can cause ink-system failure.

    Install without forcing it

Place the supply in the exact slot and orientation shown for the model. Stop if it does not seat with the documented motion; forcing it can damage the supply or printer.

    Close, align, and test

Close the access area, follow any alignment or calibration prompt, then print one test page. Keep the used supply contained and follow the manufacturer's recycling guidance.

How to confirm it worked

The printer recognizes the new supply, shows no cartridge or supply error, and completes its alignment or one-page test print.
