Cartridge not recognised

Top-tier page. High intent, and brand-specific causes (chips, firmware) defeat generic answers.

Likely causes and fixes

  1. 1. The cartridge's electrical contacts are dirty or damaged, so the printer cannot read them.

    1. Caution: Avoid getting ink on skin or clothing.

Remove the cartridge from the printer.

  3. 3. A used (non-new) cartridge was installed, or the wrong consumable was replaced (for example a drum unit instead of a toner cartridge), so the printer cannot recognize it as a valid replacement.

    1. Verify the correct consumable was replaced (toner cartridge, not drum unit).

    2. Caution: This step can be done wrong in a way that is costly or hard to undo, including voiding your warranty. Check your model's manual before proceeding.

If the message continues, clean the corona wire following the model's manual.

  4. 4. HP's Dynamic Security firmware authenticates the security chip on each cartridge and is designed to block cartridges with a non-HP or modified chip, including cartridges that previously worked before a firmware update.

    1. Check the printer's firmware update history in its settings menu.

    2. Confirm whether the installed cartridge is genuine HP or a refilled/third-party unit.
