HP printer setup

How to set up an HP printer

Put the HP printer in Wi-Fi setup mode, then use HP's official app to connect it to the same network as your computer or phone.

What you need

  • The printer, router, and setup device powered on
  • The Wi-Fi network name and password
  • The setup device connected to that Wi-Fi network

Connect your HP printer to Wi-Fi

  1. 1

    Prepare the printer

Turn on the printer, router, and computer or phone. Connect the setup device to the Wi-Fi network the printer should use, and place the printer within reliable range of the router.

Restore Wi-Fi setup mode when needed

If the printer was previously configured or the HP app cannot find it, restore Wi-Fi setup mode using the instructions for the exact model. HP says setup mode normally remains available for two hours.

    Open the official HP app

Get the HP app from 123.hp.com or the device's official app store. Choose the option to add or set up a printer, then select the printer when it appears.

    Complete the guided connection

Follow the app prompts to send the Wi-Fi details to the printer and wait for setup to finish. Bluetooth may help discovery during setup, but printing does not occur over Bluetooth.

    Run a test print

Print a one-page document. If the printer joins Wi-Fi but remains unavailable to the computer, continue with the offline diagnostic path.

How to confirm it worked

The printer appears in the HP app and the device's printer list, reports ready or idle, and completes a one-page test print.
