How to connect a printer to Wi-Fi

Connect the printer to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer or phone, then add it from your device’s printer settings or the manufacturer’s official setup app.

What you need

  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password
  • A computer or phone already connected to that network
  • The printer powered on and placed within reliable range of the router

Connect the printer

  1. 1

    Prepare the printer and network

Turn on the printer and router. Confirm the computer or phone you will use for setup is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want the printer to join. Do not use a guest network unless the printer manufacturer explicitly supports it.

Put the printer into wireless setup mode

Open the printer’s Wireless, Network, or Setup menu and start its wireless setup wizard. Button-only printers use a model-specific button sequence, so check the official manual instead of guessing or copying a sequence for a different model.

    Select your Wi-Fi network

Choose your network name on the printer and enter its password. If the printer has no screen, use the manufacturer’s official setup app to send the network details to it.

    Add the printer on Windows

On Windows 11, open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners and choose Add device. Select the printer when it appears. Windows 10 uses Settings, Devices, then Printers & scanners.

Or add the printer on a Mac

Open System Settings, choose Printers & Scanners, then select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax. macOS normally uses AirPrint when the printer supports it; otherwise use current software from the printer manufacturer.

    Print a test page

Open the newly added printer in your device settings and print a test page or a one-page document. A successful test confirms both discovery and basic printing, not just that the printer joined Wi-Fi.

How to confirm it worked

The printer appears in your device’s printer list, shows ready or idle, and completes a one-page test print without switching your device to a separate printer network.
