Setup diagnosis

What to do when a printer is not found

Confirm the printer is ready and both devices use the same local network, retry discovery, then follow the device-specific manual-add path only after checking compatibility and the network connection.

What you need

  • The exact printer model and its current display or light status
  • Access to the printer and router
  • The phone or computer being used for setup

Connect the printer

  1. 1

    Clear printer errors first

Make sure the printer is powered on, ready, and not stopped by a paper, cover, ink, toner, or service message. A device in an error state may not complete discovery.

    Verify the connection type

For Wi-Fi, put the printer and setup device on the same local network. For USB, reconnect the cable directly and try another compatible port if available.

  3. 3

    Retry normal discovery

Return to the device's printer settings or official manufacturer app and let its search finish. Do not select a similarly named printer belonging to another network or user.

  4. 4

    Check compatibility

Confirm the printer supports the operating system and connection method. This is especially important for ChromeOS, AirPrint, older printers, and Windows on ARM computers.

  5. 5

Use manual addition only with verified details

If automatic discovery still fails, use the operating system's manual-add option with the printer's verified network name or address. Avoid guessing addresses or installing a third-party discovery tool.

    Test after the printer appears

Print one page. If the printer is now installed but reports offline or the job remains queued, continue with that specific diagnostic instead of repeating setup.

How to confirm it worked

The intended printer appears in the device's printer list and completes a one-page test print.
